Shoal Hope Ciderworks

Our Story and Our Ciders

"On the 15th of May we had again sight of land, which made ahead, being as we thought an island, by reason of a large sound that opened westward between it and the mainland; from coming to the west end therefore we did perceive a large opening. We called it 'Shoal Hope'....

...Near this cape we came to anchor in fifteen fathoms, where we took great store of codfish for which we altered the name and called it Cape Cod"

- Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, May 15, 1602

The idea for Shoal Hope Ciderworks came to me one day in 2014, while walking down the Provincetown harbor beach with my dog, Bella.  I remember stopping while Bella rolled in the sand and looking up at the Pilgrim Monument, and the idea came to me.  I’d been drinking hard cider for several years when travelling to the UK on business and occasionally drinking the large and regional US commercial brands.  The idea of producing a modern version of a traditional New England beverage in the place where the Pilgrims first landed when seeking their freedom, and which is now a central point for modern day lifestyle freedoms stuck with me.

Having produced cider in traditional home-scale equipment, I soon went all-in with a cider press and stainless-steel fermenter and began developing a range of ciders.  The first cider I produced placed third in a local brewing competition and became what is now my signature product.  An off-dry, carbonated cider that is easy and refreshing to drink called “Monument”.  Monument was awarded a silver medal a few years later at the Great Lakes International Cider And Perry competition, the world's  largest cider judging event.

While that first blend was maturing in a stainless-steel tank, I started fermenting a second and wholly different blend which is flavored with cranberry bog honey.  The traditional flavor was also recognized with a silver medal at GLINTCAP.  Shortly thereafter I produced my first Whiskey Barrel aged cider called “Empty Barrel”.  This cider was awarded first place for ciders in the 2017 Boston Brewoff.  In early 2017 I created my fourth variety, a cranberry apple blend called “Little Tart”, which was also won a silver medal at the GLINTCAP Competition and in 2018 was named one of the 98 best ciders in North America by CiderCraft magazine.

So now with four great ciders and the support of my family, I committed myself to developing commercial operations.  I’ve studied the commercial production processes and completed a production course at Cornell University in January 2017.  The commercial production was officially launched on May 17, 2017 and the first deliveries were made on June 24, 2017.  Now, 3 years later Shoal Hope Ciderworks produces 9 ciders including a few seasonal  and private label ciders.
